Editing makes a video better when it serves the story the script wanted to tell, and editing makes a video worse when it tries to compensate for a story that wasn't there.
The honest test of a cut is whether removing it would make the video harder to follow. If yes, the cut is doing work. If no, the cut is decoration. A surprising amount of edit time on the modern internet is decoration. Decoration isn't bad in moderation, the way a sprinkle of paprika isn't bad on top of a soup, but you can't make a soup out of paprika.
The rhythm test is more useful than the cut count. Watch a chunk of your video without sound and ask: does the visual pace match the emotional pace of what's being said? When the script slows down to make a point, the visuals should slow with it. When the script picks up, the visuals can pick up. A video that cuts at the same rate from start to end feels emotionally flat regardless of how dramatic the script is.
Sound design does more work than most editors give it credit for. A well-placed silence is a punctuation mark. A subtle low rumble under a serious moment tells the viewer "this is serious" before the script does. A cheap whoosh on every transition tells the viewer "I'm not confident the cut speaks for itself," which is usually true.
Color and stylistic grading should be the last decisions, not the first. A video that has been graded into a specific look before the story is locked tends to need a re-grade later, because the look was tuned to a version of the story that no longer exists. Lock the story, then lock the look.
The final test we recommend is the friend test. Show a rough cut to one person who is not familiar with the topic. Watch them watch it. Don't talk. Note where their face goes blank, where they reach for their phone, where they smile. That ninety seconds of observed body language tells you more than any analytics dashboard ever will.
